My New Book

The images may be frozen through the skillful use of camera technology, but it is the soul of the photographer that is reflecting on the other side of ‘the Glass’.

Ever since I picked up Graham Greene’s ‘Journey Without Maps’ from the school library, two things happened; first, the title got stuck in my head and second, I started compulsively reading travelogues, especially those that took you into relatively unknown or offbeat places. Anupama Tiku-Dhar’s maiden venture, ‘Peering Through the Glass’ is a bold entry into the genre of travel writing, where her camera comes into play most effectively.

That Canada is a beautiful country, geography lessons taught us in ample doses and as one grew into adolescence, one dreamt of trout fishing and Arctic wolves in the Canadian outback. Yet strangely, there were not too many images that showcased this vast, relatively unpopulated, landscape. Wildlife yes, but very little on the rural landscape. Towards that end, Tiku-Dhar’s collection of images is an extremely welcome addition.

Having worked with various professional cameramen in the past, I’ve always felt there is a tendency to ‘over compose’. Tiku-Dhar doesn’t do that and lets the camera do its job which is to translate what she is seeing and then share. Her capture of colour composition has a touch of Claude Monet, for there is a lot of blue and green. Also, her images bring to mind the immortal lines of Robert Frost, ‘Nature’s first green is gold’. Equally enthralling are some of her snowscapes, which incidentally are never easy to capture.

All in all, it’s a wonderful collection where one feels like pausing and drinking in the beauty that Tiku-Dhar shares with us. The images may be frozen through the skillful use of camera technology, but it is the soul of the photographer that is reflecting on the other side of ‘the Glass’

About the author

Despite having her father’s Zeiss Rangefinder 35 mm camera available throughout her childhood to experiment with photography, only 12 years ago did Anupama Tiku-Dhar take photography seriously. She describes herself as an intuitive photographer. Anupama does not restrict herself to any particular genre; any subject which intrigues her makes her reach for the camera. She travels regularly and has clicked photographs in various parts of the world and India. Anupama discovered her passion for photography on her travels and now wonders whether photography spurs her travels or the other way around. She has been a student of Physics, is a science buff, an occasional birder, a movie addict, a former Suzuki mom and an avid music listener, among others. She is now trying her hand as a freelance Graphic Designer.
